Project Overview

The McKinney Silo Mural Project features the installation of a mural on the 100’ tall historic concrete silos and grain elevator in McKinney off of East Virginia and Main Streets. The mural will be created by internationally acclaimed Australian artist Guido van Helten. Van Helten creates oversized photorealism murals. His work is featured across the world and his designs are influenced by, and representative of, the community in which they are created.

This project will pay tribute to McKinney’s rich industrial and agricultural heritage and highlight redevelopment east of State Highway 5.

About the Artist

Guido van Helten’s murals are painted with high-quality pigment paints in neutral colors chosen specifically to blend with the surface and bring out the existing industrial architecture of the structures. This approach ensures the artwork will weather well and complement the structure itself.

McKinney’s silo mural will contribute to van Helten’s U.S. silo series, Monuments. These murals create a trail across the country with other public art installations in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas.

Public art expresses and supports a sense of neighborhood history, culture and identity. It also attracts visitors and helps drive economic vitality.

Van Helten's most recent U.S. silo mural was completed in October 2021 in Salina, Kansas. The 360-degree Salina, Kansas mural was inspired by van Helten's visit to a local after school program.
